Hello, my name is James Perkins and I want to welcome you to IVLA.

I grew up in Kentucky working on my family’s cattle farm and lumber company. It always seemed like half my family worked construction, while the other half were educators in the local school. I always knew both would become a big part of my life when I grew up. I played basketball and soccer in high school going on to play soccer in college. After a few years of college, I left to join the U.S. Army Military Police Corp. I was stationed in Germany and deployed to Afghanistan. I enjoyed my time in the army, but felt that it was my time to search out new opportunities and get back to the family business. Once my time was up in the Army I went back to college to finish my degree in Social Studies and Math while working along side my family building homes. I have taught math and social studies in a traditional classroom for 3 years before making the switch to online educator here at IVLA. I have been married to my lovely wife Teresa since 2009 (who is also an educator) and we have built a home here in Kentucky on a small produce farm.
