IVLA’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program provides learning enrichment, fosters critical thinking, encourages creative problem-solving skills, and facilitates cooperative learning opportunities with other gifted students.

Through coordination among our program administrators, teachers, and success coaches, IVLA provides the following services to gifted students:

Learning at a higher cognitive level for intellectually gifted students
Enrichment, acceleration and advancement

Exposure to experiences, materials, and information beyond what is offered through the regular curriculum at a student’s particular grade level.

Interaction with other gifted and talented students through a supervised student engagement platform.

GATE for Elementary & Middle School

GATE ELEMENTARY

IVLA GATE students in grades 3-5 will work on projects utilizing the depth and complexity icons.  These icons take students beyond surface level understanding of concepts and enhance critical thinking skills.  They will participate in Literature Circles and have access to IXL and RAZ Kids.  IVLA GATE Elementary students will use the Accelerate curriculum.

GATE MIDDLE SCHOOL

IVLA GATE students in grades 6-8 will work in honors level courses with projects utilizing the depth and complexity icons.  These icons take students beyond surface level understanding of concepts and enhance critical thinking skills. Middle school GATE students will participate in Literature Circles where they will collaborate in groups on a supervised application. They will also have the opportunity to get ahead in high school by taking high school level credit as early as 7th grade. IVLA GATE Middle School students will use the Apex curriculum.

GATE FAQ

What is the difference between the GATE program and the regular program?
Students in the GATE program will have access to our regular program but will have lessons at a higher cognitive level, participate in additional literacy circles, and have the opportunity to take honors level courses.
What is GATE?
GATE stands for Gifted And Talented Education. IVLA refers to its program for gifted students as the GATE program.
What are the depth and complexity icons?
The Depth & Complexity Chart are visual prompts intended to assist students to go beyond surface level understanding of a concept and enhance their ability to think critically. These tools help students dig greater into a concept and understand that concept with greater complexity.
What are literature circles?
In a literature circle, students will interact with other GATE students through a supervised application. Each student will have a specified role, and students will read, discuss, and respond about books while engaging in critical thinking and reflection. Literature circles will help students construct meaning with other readers while reshaping and adding to their understanding.
If my student was in GATE in another program, are they eligible for IVLA GATE?
Yes, after a review of previous records and report cards.
How is GATE identified on records and report cards?
Students in the GATE program will have a GATE class notated on their report card.
