A Guide to Credit by Exam Program

Earn High School Credits with the Credit by Exam Program!

CBE Blog WS 115

Through IVLA, all high school students have the opportunity to earn credits by demonstrating their knowledge and skills through the Credit by Exam (CBE) program. Let’s dive into the details to see if this program is right for you!

💡 What is Credit by Exam (CBE)?

Credit by Exam (CBE) allows you to earn credits by taking a test that measures your understanding of a core course required for graduation. No need to complete the entire course—just show your competency through one exam!

🎓 Who Can Take a CBE?

  • Eligibility: Any high school student who believes they can demonstrate course mastery, whether they are IVLA students or enrolled in a public school, is eligible.
  • Exam Content: CBE exams are based on the learning objectives of each course.
  • Passing Requirements: A passing score is 70% or higher. Remember, this program is available only for core courses, not for Honors or AP credits.

📋 Steps to Apply and Take a CBE

Ready to apply? Follow these key steps:

  1. Scheduling: Set up a time for your exam. Each test is 60 minutes long.
  2. Exam Format: The test is 50 multiple-choice questions and must be completed in a single sitting with no breaks.
  3. Proctored Testing: All CBEs are proctored online, ensuring a focused environment.

💻 Note: Once you begin, you won’t be able to leave the exam room or exit your browser.

🔄 Retakes and Exam Coverage

  • Retakes: If you don’t pass the first time, don’t worry! You’re eligible to retake the exam after a two-week break.
  • Credit Coverage: Each CBE covers one semester (or 0.5 credits) of the chosen course.
